Packing Advice
The following is meant only as a guideline to help our customers with their packing.
Protecting Breakables
Prior to packing boxes it is wise to wrap some items to guard them from scratching and shattering. Removals packing paper is the preferred material to use for wrapping crockery, glassware and breakable items, it is not advisable to use newspaper as the ink may transfer to hands and then to household items. It is advisable to firstly wrap plates then pack them vertically as when laid flat the edges could break if any pressure is sustained to box. Plug small spaces with smaller wrapped items or scrunched up wrapping paper. Remove tops and lids from jars and wrap separately. Fasten any open boxes and bottles before packing them to prevent spills and seepage.
Consider Weight
Try to pack each box so that the total weight of the box is light enough for one person to easily pick up and carry. Pack lighter items into large boxes and heavier items into smaller boxes. Do not put too many books into a box as a collection of boxes can create a heavy weight. Never put heavy items on top of lighter items in the same box, as this could cause the heavier items to sink, possibly causing damage to the lighter items and making the box uneven in weight. Make sure the weight in the box is balanced and packed tightly so that no items can move around causing the weight to be uneven (example scenario would be if a heavy item in the box moved whilst been lifted causing the removal man to have accident or drop and damage contents of box). Mark boxes with THIS WAY UP if turning the box the wrong way would damage the contents or cause the weight to be uneven. It is advisable to empty wardrobes, fridges, freezers, bookcases, etc to reduce the weight of item.
Wise Packing
Where ever possible pack a room at a time, labelling each box with its contents and where it should be placed in the new home. Mark boxes as fragile when boxes contain such items. Support bottom of boxes with packing tape and ensure they are closed securely also with packing tape.
